2009 Roxy Invitational

Roxy South Africa today announced the list of twelve surfers that have been invited to contest the 2009 Roxy Invitational at the fabled Ponto d'Oura in Mozambique from 4 to 11 May. The list includes 10 of South Africa's top female surfers, while some international flavour has been added with the inclusion of two surfers from Reunion.

Topping the list is 2008 Roxy Invitational winner and former World Championship Tour surfer Heather Clark (Port Shepstone), who will be going all out to defend her title and claim the R10,000 winner's cheque. However, the likes of top surfers such as Kirsty Delport (Durban), Tanika Hoffman (Cape Town) and Nikita Robb (East London) will all be vying to take one of the most prestigious titles in South African surfing.

Delport and Hoffman in particular, as members of the 2009 South African junior surfing team, will have something to prove and will both find the long right hand waves of Ponto d'Oura to their liking, while Robb is one the most experienced competitive surfers in the country.

The two international invitees, Johanne Defay and Canelle Bullard, both hail from the tropical island of Reunion and have been raised surfing the island's perfect reef breaks. They bring a wealth of experience and talent and will also be looking to put on a good show for their South African rivals.

The diminutive Bianca Buitendag (George) and Durban surfing sensation Sarah Baum are two of the youngest invitees but both have solid competitive track records, while East London's Alice MacGregor has already made several trips to Ponto in the past and will be calling on all this experience to keep her in the running.

Kommetjie local Tarryn Chudleigh is rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with in South African surfing, and following her win in the premier open division of the 2008 Roxy Wahine Cup (South Africa's premier stand-alone female surfing event), she is a major contender for the title as the perfect rights of Ponto will greatly suit her snappy backhand attack. The list of invitees is rounded out by Roxy Invitational rookie Faye Zoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) and stalwart Tasha Mentasti (Durban), both of whom are strong contenders and will ensure the 2009 edition of the event is a highly competitive affair.

This is the third year of this successful and popular event, and the R15,000 in prize money up for grabs and the idyllic setting of Ponto d'Oura will ensure that the 2009 event will be as exciting and enjoyable as the previous two.
