I would reccomend if you're travelling alone for the first time. Try a place where they speak your language and there are lots of hostels to meet up with other travelers. Australia and NZ is a great "safer" place to travel and offers lots of group activities in almost every popular place you stay. Places like Sydney or Cairns, where the Great Barrier Reef is, have lots fo hostels and college age travelers from all over the world almost year round. And, I would say NZ is quite similar. Hope this helps!

I often travel alone because most of my friends are married and have kids. When I want to travel where I don't speak the language or being on my own might be dangerous (ie: Middle East) I hook up with a tour group. My schedule is more controlled, but I've never had a problem finding a tour that includes everything I wanted to do anyway. Several of them also cater to people traveling alone by offering to find you a roomie so you don't have to pay the single supplement and you have a friend to hang out with during the trip. |

I always wear clothes that blend in, like in Canada and the States in places like Vancouver and New York, I just wore my jeans and a white shirt and a baseball cap. I try and look fairly ordinary. The country that speaks your language is a good tip for going alone, and also the tour info in dangerous countries. Mexico was great even though I only knew a few basic words, I never had any trouble. I guess the best thing is just to keep your witts about you, and keep your guardian angel close by! Travelling alone is FANTASTIC cause you can do what you want, when you want, sleep when you want, eat when you want, and the finances are never an issue, cause you only have to consider your own money. You will meet like minded people in Backpacker Places too, and other travellers moving alone. So, rattle on. Sorry. I guess my best tip is to blend in.

Hiya,
I too recommend staying in hostels. I stayed in a hotel once, and you just don't meet anyone really because you're just in your own room. I stayed in a mixed dorm on my own and met some awesome people.
For Aussies, of course, you'll always meet new people in London. If you're after some adventure, don't hesitate to venture to places where the language is foreign. Central Europe with a phrasebook is easy to handle. |

Well that sounds great. I totaly get the whole on your own deal, its so much sympler and your more likely to follow through on your plans! the thing is i like to share my experiances with people, im quite self concius and feel uncomfertable when doing things on my own like im being watched hehe. I guess thats just somthing i should work on before i finaly get round to geting out there. to breakdance_nothearts be realy carefull. doing things on your own can be liberating but it is also dangeros wherver you travel. Hey girls, I'd too recomend Australia and NZ as it's a supersafe, highly friendly and fun, and of mindblowing beauty (love it, all right ;) May be short though depending how much time you've got. It's a BIG country and the flight is 24 hours. The US could be a bit closer and i guess you've got it all there! Europe's got some real cool (and cheap) places too. What sort of experience are you after?
Be the change you want to see in the world. |
