We recently posted an article on Girls Surf and Wakeboading Camps.  Has anyone been to a camp to learn to ride?

Do you have a camp to recommend or and experience to share?

Several years ago, I went to Surf Diva, outside of San Diego. I learned a lot and it was also a lot of fun. I met people from different parts of the country. What was nice is meals were included. The instructors were helpful. I like the mantra "The best surfer is the one having the most fun." I liked learning in an all female environment because it was not competitive, nor did I feel self conscious about floundering all over the place. Before we got in the water, we had an hour long talk about water safety and the fundamentals of surfing. We were taught about choosing the right board, how to carry the board properly, etc. What I remembered was the pop up training sessions before going in. We spent a half hour on the sand practicing pop ups. The instructor to student ratio was 1 to 4. While practicing in the water, the instructor would watch, correct, and give constructive feedback. Besides surfing we did other fun activities. The last night, the campers put on a talent show. The camps have expanded to Costa Rica and Australia. I definitely recommend it. The website is www.surfdiva.com. If you have an opportunity, try it.

Willing to meet up

Two summers ago I went to Costa Rica on a surfing-oriented Outward Bound course through Girl Scouts USA ( Costa Rica Rainforest Outward Bound School runs other women-only surf camps too). I loved surfing, but what I liked about Outward Bound was that we spent a large chunk of time out of the water learning about tides, the local ecosystems, and Costa Rican culture. I guess most camps and courses do stuff like that when the tide is out though. CRROBS also offers multi-activity courses that spend a week trekking through the jungle, a week of language emersion, and a week surfing.

I guess as far as experience/advice to share...its frustrating when you fall off your board wave after wave after wave. There were lots of girls in my group who gave up, and would only spend about half an hour a day with a surfboard and spend the rest lying on the beach. Those of us who stuck with it were the only ones who managed to start catching and riding some real waves by the end of our 5 days. The first few days are hard, painful, and discouraging, but if you grit your teeth through it, the other side is soooo much fun.
