Big White Bliss

From 30th December - February 12th I was living, working and loving the Canadian ski fields. I was at Big White, BC, Canada. Gently nestled between world-class ski resorts, the Okanagan provides an alternative to the "big ski resorts". Big White is one of these resorts and it’s the perfect place for one’s first ski season. Cosy, pretty, great range of runs and the best people. It’s a real family resort, but as soon as the sun goes down.. It’s party time!

This is a bit of a guide on what it was like to live and work there:

I lived with my Friend Liz up until the 10th in a huge house made up of 4 sections with 18 people living in it. There was actually a spare bed in the section of the house next to Liz’s that I could stay in. The house is for staff of the village cafe and bakery where Liz works. Her boss had to decide whether i could stay permanently or not. It took him 2 weeks to decide and then finally he said i could stay but wanted to charge me a lot more than the going rate so I decided it was best to move to the Hostel. It was a bit sad leaving a huge house of 9 girls to a hostel with bunk bed rooms, but I actually only moved 50 metres up the hill…. So I stopped in 4 times a day at least! That’s what living in the village is like. The house and the hostel are about a 100m walk to the pub and then another 200 metres to the central square and my work!! Woo hoo. I have never had this type of closeness to work and friends- proximity wise. This is the benefit of being at a smaller resort.

The hostel turned out to be great. The Same Sun Hostel is a well known hostel around Canada, especially for it’s free Pancakes! Every morning!! It’s got a good cheap rate (about $500 Canadian a month.) and it’s ski in ski out. It’s actually the only hostel on the hill and for this reason the residence become like a family. I was in a room of 5 boys, in the middle on the top bunk –DAMN! But it was actually great. The guys were really cool and acted like big brothers always looking out for me. Everyone at the Hostel was so nice. Dinner was a bit insane with everyone in the kitchen and each night being like a big ol family reunion with tales of the day being told and plans for the evening being made. I’m glad I got to experience both the hostel and home life.

Work- I worked as a housekeeper and it was easy. It's a fun job and the crew was awesome. Our hotel, The White crystal, was 100% ski in and ski out and so close to everything. It was great; I got to look out the window at people skiing, or out over the mountains, all day. Who can say they have a view like that at work everyday. It was so peaceful and made work so much easier.

I’m not sure if we were allowed to but we would watch TV and or listen to the radio as we worked. We got to chat and muck about all day, whilst of course doing our jobs and working hard……….. when necessary. Guests were pretty friendly most of the time and it was nice when they were around and we actually got to speak we them.

There of course were some perks of the job. We got to keep food we found left in the rooms after guests left and Alcohol too, woo hoo!! Also if we wanted extra hours we could go to another hotel and help out, so meeting new people again- that's the thing I loved the most and you really get to know the people as you are working together all day. Even the managers are so chilled out and cool! One day I was sitting in the wheely laundry basket thing and was having rides down the hall. ha-ha Mum would be so proud.

Perhaps the best thing about the job is the skills I learnt. I can actually clean a bathroom properly and do hospital corners on beds so Dad is very thankful for my time in Canada. Do I actually put these skills into practice…. No. But it’s the principle right?

I’m a boarder Chick now and I LOVE it. I think I must be very lucky when it comes to snow sports and I pick them up very quickly. I really enjoyed learning to board and had 2 lessons in the first few weeks and also a couple of mates took me out. By this time I had my turns down pat, a bit more practice and I would be doing rails. That seemed like such a far off dream but now I can! How cool is that to look back on what you have learnt.

I bought Ladies Burton Mint Boots (which I am now selling so contact me if you are interested, Brown, size 9 US.) and got my sexy board the week after. Gear was so much cheaper there. I also bought a cool beanie and neck warmer and socks and the most gorgeous jacket, all matching OF COURSE! I love Snow gear and now have well and truly expanded my range… much to Dad’s dismay.

Go to www.bigwhite.com for more information about this awesome resort. OR contact me for information on doing a season.

It’s best to apply for the season at least 4 months before it starts but you can also do what I did and go a little bit later and just hope for the best. A lot of people decide to leave or change their mind and so jobs become available sporadically throughout the season. Why not give it a shot!!! You won’t regret it.
