Big White is such a family resort that it even has a sister resort, Silver Star! (www.skisilverstar.com) Shuttles run every Tuesday and Thursday from Big White to Silver Star and from Silver Star to Big White. The trip takes 2.5 hours and it’s a great chance to see more of
We decided to take the alternative to the bus and drive ourselves there. My friend Mikey had bought a car van ( Meryl the Mule) with friends for only $1000 Canadian and so she was our trusty steed for the day. OR not so trusty. The 2.5 hour drive took us closer to 4 hours by the time the 4 of us got packed and ready, stopped for food and to buy some ski gear and navigated the treacherous roads which lead the way to Silver Star. We finally arrived at 1pm. This is more than half a skiing day gone and we were meant to be meeting 2 of my friend Liz’s mates from home. Ah well. We made it.
I had been ever so clever and decided to ski for the day as there are more cat tracks and flatter runs at this resort so I thought I would go back to my old skiing days. Trouble with this was I had not practiced much and was now using more a snowboarding technique… It wasn’t pretty. My ski boots were wrong so skiing was awful, I hadn’t skied that badly since my first day ever- and I found it extremely frustrating. It shows how important it is to have ski gear that fits you correctly. I went back to the car and changed my socks and I even tried hiring different boots. After only 3 runs, I threw in the towel and decided to just enjoy the pleasant little village. Not to self- Don’t hire ski gear the night before without testing your abilities in it. It was actually nice to realise though that I may be a better snowboarder now then a skier! Boarder Chick for life!
All was not lost, I had lot of fun shopping for trendy ski gear and perusing the cosy little village stores. I met with all the others and we had a nice lunch. There is always something so nice about coming in from the cold snow and tiring ski day that makes a meal and the warmth and company of friends so much better. We met the 2 mates of Liz and now have recruited them to come and stay with us at Big White, great stuff. We lost my friend Rob for the whole day as he was cramming in as much boarding as possible.
Unfortunately we had to leave at 4pm because the slopes close and the drive is just too dangerous when it’s dark going around the tight bends and icy roads. But poor Meryl the mule struggled the whole day. A seven seater dodgy as van which broke down twice and needed a huge amount of speed to get up hills. At one point we had to reverse all the way down a hill to a flat to get speed up and try again. We also got stuck in a ditch and were nearly stranded at Silver Star when the car wouldn't start. They actually called upon me to clutch start it- and it worked! Emma saves the day. It had to be a first!
